Whether you're a newcomer to the thrilling world of trading or have a bit of experience under your belt, one truth always remains: risk management is the backbone of successful trading. It's not just about raking in profits; it's about safeguarding your hard-earned capital and steering clear of unnecessary financial pitfalls.

If you are not managing risk, then you are just gambling, and here at the Logical Trading Academy, I don't teach people to be gamblers. In this article, we'll explore some fundamental risk management strategies that every trader, especially beginners, should be well-acquainted with. If you follow me, you will hear about this subject quite a bit, because if there is anything in trading that is worth repeating, this is it.

Understanding Risk Management

Do you thrive on the adrenaline rush of high-stakes trading or prefer a more conservative approach? It helps you set realistic goals and ensures you never find yourself taking on more risk than you can comfortably handle.

2. Set Stop Loss Orders- Don't Leave Things To Chance

By setting a stop loss, you create a safety net that ensures even if the market takes an unfavorable turn, your losses won't spiral out of control. Think of it as your "Plan B" for every trade.

3. Diversify Your Portfolio- You Know, Eggs and Baskets

When you are beginning, it could be best to focus on just a few assets to trade until you get good at trading those assets, then take your profit and disperse it to wider investments. My personal strategy is similar. I focus on trading only a couple of assets, namely Bitcoin and Hive, occasionally will through in some other altcoins or even some Gold and Silver options, but I use the profits to diversify to other investments like dividend stocks and investing in my homestead farm.

4. Position Sizing- Size Does Matter

Proper position sizing is a fundamental pillar of risk management. It determines the amount of your capital allocated to each trade. A widely accepted rule of thumb is to risk only 1-2% of your total trading capital on any single trade. If you are trying to scale a small account, you might have to risk some higher percentages like maybe up to 10% of the account per trade. The trick here would be to make sure you are setting a tight stop loss to be able to protect your capital.

I suggest for beginners to learn how to trade what is called 'spot' trading, meaning you are just buying and selling the asset like you would any other product. When you start diving into futures and options, things get real risky, and expensive, so you need to know what you are doing when you start playing with other people's money.

6. Keep Emotions in Check- Just Be Cool, Dude

Emotions, especially fear and greed, can be a trader's worst enemies. They can cloud your judgment and drive you to make impulsive decisions. To maintain effective risk management, stick to your trading plan and avoid letting emotions dictate your choices. Stay disciplined, and your trading decisions will be more rational and less influenced by temporary market fluctuations. Things in trading can get stressful, so keeping a cool head is going to help you come out on top. In the infamous words of Ice Cube, "Check yourself before you wreck yourself"!

7. Regularly Review and Adjust- Adapt or Die

The world of trading is in constant flux. What worked yesterday might not work tomorrow. Therefore, it's crucial to regularly review your risk management strategies and adapt them as needed. Stay up-to-date with market trends and be open to learning from your experiences. In this ever-evolving landscape, flexibility and continuous improvement are your allies.

One thing that I learned working for Apple was that there are always areas of opportunity. This is the same in trading. There is no top, no best trader, everyone in this industry is always trying to improve their edge, no matter how long they have been here or how much capital they have. You can only improve yourself over time.

8. Practice, Practice, Practice- Start Trading on Paper

Before you dive into the world of real money trading, consider practicing with a demo or paper trading account. This allows you to hone your risk management skills without the pressure of losing your hard-earned capital. It's like training wheels for traders, helping you gain confidence and experience without risking a penny.

If you look at trading as a competitive sport, then you are an athlete. And every athlete has to workout and practice. This is the same thing in trading. Paper trading and backtesting strategies are like practicing and watching game play reels to see where you need to improve. Again, it's a matter of adapt or die in this crazy world of trading.
